Q&A with color consultant Steven Vigue
Sherwin Williams color consultant Steven Vigue transformed my new home this summer. Even though I see everyday how color affects people through clothing, I was still amazed at how much paint could change the energy of each room.
JM: How does color affect our moods?
SV: Everything in life is about energy. Color carries electromagnetic energy. Although we don’t know exactly how it occurs, it is believed that our brain and endocrine system respond to this energy and cause us to feel or act in a particular way.
“Warm” colors (reds, oranges, yellows) help us to feel happy and comfortable- think of sitting in the sunshine, or in front of a fireplace. Under certain circumstances they can stimulate- spiking adrenaline, increasing our appetite, even fueling anger.
On the flip side, greens, blues, and purples are known as “cool” colors. Cool colors help to calm the body and mind- think of the rolling sea, or the evening skylight. In the extreme, they can also bring on feelings of sadness or loneliness.
JM: What is the best way to choose colors that reflect one’s personality?
SV: You really have to spend time researching the meaning behind colors, and select color that is appropriate to what you are trying to convey within the confines of a particular situation. For instance- wearing dark blue at work conveys leadership qualities. Lighter blues are friendly and approachable- perfect for a party.
JM: What are the biggest trends in home paint colors?
SV: Exterior palettes are being showcased in deeper hues, punctuated with a classic bright white. And I love how everyone is exploring their individuality by embracing a fun unique color for their front door.
Neutrals still rule, and grays continue to be strong for interiors. Gone is the old “battleship” gray. Today’s gray palette is loaded with undertones of purple, blue, green, and brown. I also see less hesitation to add some drama by introducing a bold, deep color in select rooms.
JM: What is your favorite part about your job?
SV: My approach has never been about selecting someone’s color for them. I consider myself the guide who helps people to develop the palette that truly expresses who they are. There is nothing more fulfilling to me in what I do, than to hear from one of my clients how happy they are when they come home!
