This week I dressed Courtney Caligiuri from The Rhode Show in a few lovely outfits from A Pea in the Pod.
The key to creating a stylish maternity look is to invest in a few beautiful maternity pieces, creatively integrate your non-maternity clothes, and then accessorize like crazy!
A few must-have investment pieces for the season: designer denim, white pants, trapeze tops, and the wrap dress. (Dresses can be a lot more comfortable than pants when you are pregnant, giving you the freedom of not having a waistband digging into your belly.)
Take stock of your non-maternity wear that can be worn through much of your pregnancy– for example, cardigans and jackets can be left unbuttoned and used as layering pieces. Tunics and leggings can be worn well into the 2nd trimester and are right on trend. Just make sure to keep the volume on one half of the body. Keeping the other half fitted will help make you look thinner.
Accessories are “one size fits all” and can bring attention to areas you would like to focus on, like your face. A long necklace can keep the eye line moving, resulting in a slimmer and longer appearance. Scarves and handbags are a great way to add some color and can be used long after the baby is born.

Welcome to the first in a series! Style Profiles will introduce you to some people I’ve crossed paths with that have inspired me with their creativity and style.

What are you wearing?
-Hat from vintage boutique (Nava)
-Black jacket (G-Star)
-Olive green long sleeve polo shirt (American Apparel)
-Hoodie from the sale rack (Urban Outfitters)
-Super Skinny Brown jeans (Levi’s)
-Vintage Italian loafers (Into The Wardrobe)
How do you describe your style?
I like a subtle contradiction and merging things together; like something a bit unrefined with a velour blazer, or something sporty like a track suit jacket with tweed pants.
What is your biggest splurge?
Seriously, anything I buy above $50 feels like a splurge, even if it’s the grand total of a week of casually buying shirts from vintage stores.
Do you have a signature look or piece?
Probably those same shoes, loafers, wallabees. I like shoes a lot, so a lot of times I build my outfits from the bottom up.

Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, $32.50
This winner of multiple ‘Allure’ Beauty Awards dries quickly and creates a natural tan that will visually slim your body. A red carpet celebrity secret! |
 |
Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleansing powder, $24.00
Yes, I’ve gushed about this before. I just love being able to skip the wash-lather-rinse-repeat AND blow-dry some mornings. Dry shampoo requires no water – just rub it in and it absorbs excess oil, leaving your hair surprisingly full of life! |
 |
Hip-T, $19.95
This fantastic invention covers the dreaded “muffin top” that can sometimes sneak over the top of your jeans. It also creates a cute layered look without the bulk. Perfect for summer! |
 |
HemmingMyWay instant hem adhesive, $22.00
As a stylist I always recommend that women have 2 pairs of fabulous jeans – one hemmed for flats and one for heels. This hem adhesive can turn your favorite long jeans into a shorter length for ballet flats and then back again! It’s better than typical fashion tape because the pieces snap together, allowing for re-use. They can even be machine washed! |
 |
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat , $40
My makeup artist calls this little stick “magic” and I have to agree. It adds light and lift to many a tired eye. It can make your eyes appear wider when used between the eyebrows. My favorite Touche Eclat trick is for those of us who have Angelina-envy: dab a little of this above your cupid’s bow – the reflection of light will make your lips look fuller and poutier. |
 |
Gal Pal Garment Deodorant Remover, $10
These dry pads buff out deodorant marks instantly – no wet washcloths or dry cleaners to contend with! A favorite of Cindy Crawford. |
 |
Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, $12.95
Nude pantyhose are never right. For slimmer, even-toned legs without the hose, try Sally Hansen Airbrush legs! The water resistant formula covers imperfections and is available in 4 shades to match any skin tone. |
 |
Clinique lipstick (shown in Pink-a-Boo), $14
Clinique doesn’t claim to whiten teeth, but they have figured out a way to make your smile brighter. Their 12 specially formulated shades create a contrast that enhances your pearly whites. They even used a dental colour guide to confirm that smiles are at least one shade brighter! |
